Guide: memory and aging
Do Memory Supplements Work? Memory and Aging, Plainly Explained
Memory supplements do not work in any way expert reviews can confirm. NIH finds no direct evidence that supplements prevent dementia (NCCIH, supplements for cognitive function), and a 2019 expert council could endorse none (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements). Some forgetting is a normal part of aging (MedlinePlus, Memory). New or worsening memory trouble needs a doctor, since many causes are treatable.

Normal aging01
Is it normal to forget things as you age?
Yes, some forgetting is normal as you age. Misplacing your keys or losing a name for a moment happens to most people, and memory tends to slow over the years (MedlinePlus, Memory).
What matters is the pattern: how often it happens, whether it is getting worse, and whether it gets in the way of daily life.
MedlinePlus draws the line at forgetting more often than other people your age, or forgetting how to do things you have done many times (MedlinePlus, Memory). Foggy days with no clear pattern are covered in brain fog basics.
Warning signs02
What are the warning signs of memory loss?
The warning signs of memory loss are changes that disrupt daily life, not passing slips. The CDC lists getting lost in a familiar neighborhood, forgetting a close family member's name and being unable to finish common tasks (CDC, Signs of dementia).
Seeing a sign does not mean dementia. The CDC suggests asking the doctor whether a more treatable condition could be the cause, and notes that early diagnosis leaves time for treatment and planning (CDC, Signs of dementia).
Usually everyday forgetfulness
- Misplacing keys or glassesThen finding them by retracing steps
- A name on the tip of your tongueIt comes back later
- Walking into a room and forgetting whyHappens now and then
- Slower recall with ageLearning still works, just slower
See a doctor soon
- Getting lost on a familiar routeDriving or walking a path you know well
- Forgetting a close family member's nameNot a passing slip
- Trouble with everyday devices or tasksA phone, the stove, paying bills
- Changes others notice firstRepeating questions, missed appointments
Sudden change?Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or weakness on one side can be a stroke. Call 911.
Signs from MedlinePlus (MedlinePlus, Memory) and CDC (CDC, Signs of dementia). Medicines, low vitamin B12, thyroid problems and depression can all affect memory (MedlinePlus, Memory loss). About 1 in 9 adults 45 and older report memory decline, and fewer than half have told a doctor (CDC, Subjective Cognitive Decline).
MCI03
What is mild cognitive impairment?
Mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, is memory or thinking trouble beyond normal aging. MedlinePlus describes it as forgetting things more often than others your age (MedlinePlus, Memory).
MCI is a reason to see a doctor, not a reason to panic. A 2017 national review found that most approaches it studied showed no evidence of delaying MCI or dementia (NIH on NASEM 2017 dementia prevention).
Supplement research in MCI is thin. A 2003 analysis of 21 acetyl-L-carnitine trials found some benefit, but a Cochrane review found none at 52 weeks (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Cochrane, acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia).
The numbers04
How many adults notice memory changes?
About 1 in 9 US adults aged 45 and older say their memory or thinking has been getting worse. The CDC puts the figure at 11.1%, from survey data for 2015 to 2017 (CDC, Subjective Cognitive Decline).
Only 45.3% of them had talked with a health care professional about it (CDC, Subjective Cognitive Decline). That gap matters, because a visit can find treatable causes.
Notice decline
US adults 45 and older reporting worse memory or thinking (CDC, Subjective Cognitive Decline)
Told a professional
Share of that group who raised it with a health care provider (CDC, Subjective Cognitive Decline)
Took a brain supplement
US adults 50 and older, as reported by AARP and the GCBH (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements)
Evidence05
Do memory supplements work?
Memory supplements do not work well enough for any expert body to back one. The Global Council on Brain Health concluded that supplements do not improve brain health or slow decline in people without a deficiency (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements).
NCCIH finds no conclusive evidence for ginkgo, and says omega-3 supplements have not been shown to help treat Alzheimer's (NCCIH, supplements for cognitive function). The larger trials point the same way.
| Supplement | What was tested | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ginkgo | Trial in more than 3,000 older adults | No drop in dementia or Alzheimer's cases (NCCIH Clinical Digest, cognition) |
| Omega-3s | 38 trials, 49,757 people | Probably little or no effect on thinking (NCCIH Clinical Digest, cognition) |
| Vitamin E | Cochrane review, 820 people | No evidence it slows progression to dementia (NCCIH Clinical Digest, cognition) |
| Curcumin, plain | 96 healthy older adults, 12 months | Limited effects on thinking (NCCIH Clinical Digest, cognition) |
| Curcumin, high-absorption | 40 adults analyzed, 18 months | Verbal memory and attention gains in a small pilot (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory) |
| Multivitamin | 573 adults 60 and older, 2 years | Small episodic memory gain, 0.12 SD units (COSMOS multivitamin cognition, 2024) |
| B12 plus folic acid | 2017 national review | Named only as a priority for more study (NIH on NASEM 2017 dementia prevention) |

Are memory supplements safe?
Memory supplements are not automatically safe. FDA does not approve supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements), and some products have held prescription drugs not listed on the label (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
Single ingredients carry their own risks. Turmeric is a rare but well-documented cause of liver injury, usually 1 to 4 months after starting (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric). CoQ10 can weaken warfarin (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and show any new supplement to your pharmacist first. See brain supplements and medications for the interactions to ask about.
Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, nausea or unusual tiredness after starting a turmeric product can signal liver trouble (NCCIH, Turmeric).
Our product07
How does Synaptril compare with the memory research?
Synaptril has no memory trial of its own. Its label says "Enhances Memory & Focus", and the asterisk means FDA did not evaluate that claim (21 CFR 101.93, structure/function claims).
Of its six lines, only turmeric has a small positive memory pilot, and that study used Theracurmin at 90 mg of curcumin twice a day (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory). We estimate Synaptril's turmeric line at about 44 mg at most, in a plain 95% curcuminoid form.
The label's L-carnitine is not the acetyl-L-carnitine used in memory studies at 1.5 to 3 grams a day (NIH ODS, Carnitine). Read the Synaptril ingredients evidence, line by line and does Synaptril work.

What helps08
What can you do about memory changes, starting this week?
Start with a doctor's visit if memory changes worry you, then build habits with evidence behind them. The Global Council on Brain Health points to exercise, sleep, mental challenge and time with other people (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements).
The CDC sets 150 minutes of moderate activity a week as the adult goal (CDC, Adult physical activity), and adults 65 and older need 7 to 8 hours of sleep (CDC, About Sleep).
FAQ09
Memory and aging questions people ask
Are memory supplements effective for healthy older adults?
Not in a way large studies confirm. A ginkgo trial in more than 3,000 older adults found no fewer dementia cases, and omega-3s probably have little or no effect on thinking (NCCIH Clinical Digest, cognition). A standard multivitamin showed only a small memory gain in the COSMOS trial (COSMOS multivitamin cognition, 2024).
Are memory supplements safe for seniors?
Some are, some are not, and none was checked for safety by FDA before sale (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements). Turmeric products have a rare, documented link to liver injury (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric), and some ingredients interact with warfarin or diabetes medicines. If you take several prescriptions, a pharmacist check matters even more.
What do health agencies say about memory supplements?
They say the evidence is not there. NCCIH finds no direct evidence that supplements prevent dementia and urges people with memory worries to see a provider (NCCIH, supplements for cognitive function). The Global Council on Brain Health, backed by AARP, could not endorse any brain supplement (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements).
How do I know if my forgetfulness is normal aging?
Occasional slips, like misplacing keys or losing a name for a moment, are normal, and recall tends to slow with age. Getting lost on a familiar route, forgetting how to use everyday devices, or forgetting more often than people your age is not typical and needs a doctor (MedlinePlus, Memory).
Can supplements help mild cognitive impairment?
No supplement has shown it can slow MCI. The 2017 national review found most interventions it studied showed no evidence of delaying MCI or dementia (NIH on NASEM 2017 dementia prevention), and a Cochrane review found no routine benefit for acetyl-L-carnitine in cognitive decline (Cochrane, acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia). A doctor can look for treatable causes.
When should I see a doctor about memory problems?
See a doctor when memory changes worry you or your family, get in the way of daily tasks, or come with trouble finding words or making decisions. The CDC says early diagnosis allows time for treatment and planning, and a more treatable cause may turn up (CDC, Signs of dementia).
Do consumer groups recommend any memory supplement?
The expert groups we cite endorse none. The Global Council on Brain Health could not back any ingredient, product or formula (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements), and NIH notes that seals from testing groups do not prove a product is safe or works (NIH ODS, Supplements: What You Need to Know). A purity seal is not proof of a memory benefit.
