Curcumin for Memory: Synaptril's Turmeric Extract, the Evidence and the Liver Signal

Quick answer

Curcumin for memory rests on small, mixed studies, and NCCIH finds no proven benefit for any use. The one positive trial used Theracurmin, a high-absorption form, at 180 mg of curcumin a day. Synaptril's standard 95% extract is line 5 of the blend and likely under about 44 mg. Turmeric is also a documented, rare cause of liver injury.

What it is01

What is the turmeric extract in Synaptril?

The turmeric in Synaptril is an extract of Curcuma longa rhizome, the underground stem of the turmeric plant. The label says it is standardized to 95% curcuminoids.

Curcuminoids are the yellow compounds in turmeric, with curcumin the best known. A 95% extract is far more concentrated than the spice in your kitchen.

It is line 5 of 6 in the 575 mg blend. Only CoQ10 weighs less, and the label prints no amount.

What the label leaves out

No black pepper extract, no piperine and no high-absorption carrier appear on the panel. That matters for both absorption and the liver.

Evidence02

Is curcumin for memory backed by research?

Curcumin for memory has weak, mixed research, and no study tested Synaptril. NCCIH says the evidence is not strong enough to show turmeric or curcumin helps any health purpose (NCCIH, Turmeric).

One small trial found a gain on memory tests. Others found little or nothing, including a 96-person, 12-month trial and a six-month Alzheimer's pilot (NCCIH Clinical Digest, cognition) (MSKCC, Turmeric).

NCCIH calls curcumin's brain evidence too limited and inconsistent to draw conclusions (NCCIH, supplements for cognitive function).

The key trial03

What did the Theracurmin memory study find?

The Theracurmin study found modest gains on memory and attention tests in a small group over 18 months. It gave 90 mg of curcumin twice a day, 180 mg in all, as a high-absorption product (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory).

Forty-six adults were randomized and 40 were analyzed. The memory result sat right at the edge of statistical significance (p = 0.05). The authors called it a pilot and did not correct for the many tests they ran.

It does not describe Synaptril. The form differs, the dose differs, and the result has not been repeated in our sources.

Three gaps between the trial and the capsule

Form: Theracurmin versus a standard 95% extract. Dose: 180 mg of curcumin versus a likely 42 mg of curcuminoids at most. Evidence: one pilot versus no trial at all.

Blend math04

How much turmeric is in one Synaptril capsule?

One Synaptril capsule likely holds under about 44 mg of turmeric extract. That is our estimate from the label order, not a measured amount.

Line 5 can weigh at most 575 ÷ 5, about 115 mg. Once the magnesium glycinate takes its share, about 175 mg at most is left for five lines, and line 5 gets at most 175 ÷ 4, about 44 mg.

At 95% curcuminoids, 44 mg of extract is about 42 mg of curcuminoids. That is under a quarter of the trial's 180 mg, in a form that absorbs less.

  1. Label-order ceiling

    575 mg ÷ 5 = about 115 mg of extract.

  2. After the magnesium glycinate

175 mg ÷ 4 = about 44 mg, if the glycinate is the 20% grade. At 14%, almost nothing is left.

  3. Curcuminoid share

    44 mg × 0.95 = about 42 mg at most.

Absorption05

Why is curcumin absorption so poor?

Curcumin absorption is poor because the gut takes in little of it and the body breaks it down fast (MSKCC, Turmeric). NCCIH makes the same point (NCCIH, Turmeric).

Some products add piperine, from black pepper, to raise absorption. Others use special carriers, as Theracurmin does. Synaptril lists neither.

Higher absorption is a trade-off. NCCIH warns that highly bioavailable forms may harm the liver (NCCIH, Turmeric). So adding pepper at home is a question for your doctor, not a simple upgrade.

Liver signal06

Can turmeric supplements harm the liver?

Yes, rarely. NIH's LiverTox gives turmeric its top likelihood score, A, meaning it is a well-documented cause of liver injury that makes people ill, not just a lab blip (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric).

Cases usually start 1 to 4 months after someone begins taking it. Most clear up 1 to 3 months after stopping. A few led to liver failure, a transplant or death.

The reports center on high-absorption curcumin products. A standard extract like Synaptril's has less data, which is not the same as being proven safe for the liver.

Stop and call a doctor if you notice

Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, nausea or poor appetite (NCCIH, Turmeric). Bring the bottle so the doctor can see every ingredient.

  1. Weeks to 8 months

The range of onset in LiverTox cases; most fall at 1-4 months.

  2. 1-3 months after stopping

    When most cases resolve.

Interactions07

Is turmeric safe with blood thinners?

Turmeric may raise bleeding risk with blood thinners such as warfarin and with antiplatelet drugs, so ask your doctor first (MSKCC, Turmeric). The evidence is preclinical plus one case report, but bleeding is not a risk to test at home.

MSKCC also notes possible interactions with some chemotherapy drugs and tacrolimus, and a higher chance of kidney stones (MSKCC, Turmeric).

Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. Read more in brain supplements and medications.

Label profile08

What does the Synaptril label show for turmeric?

The Synaptril label shows turmeric as "Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Extract 95% Curcuminoids", line 5 of 6, with no amount.

Every other fact in the profile comes from the research, not the bottle. The full panel is on the Synaptril supplement facts page.

Where it sits09

Should turmeric decide whether you try Synaptril?

Turmeric is a small line in Synaptril and should not be the deciding reason. The likely dose sits well below the one positive trial, in a different form.

The liver signal is the part to remember. Compare all six lines on the Synaptril ingredients page, check Synaptril side effects, or read the last line, coenzyme Q10.

FAQ10

Turmeric and curcumin questions people ask

Is Synaptril's turmeric the same as Theracurmin?

No. Theracurmin is a specific high-absorption curcumin product, and the 2018 memory pilot used it at 180 mg of curcumin a day (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory). Synaptril lists a standard turmeric extract with 95% curcuminoids, likely under about 44 mg per capsule, so the trial's results do not transfer to it.

How many people took part in the Theracurmin memory study?

Forty-six adults aged 51 to 84 were randomized, and 40 were analyzed after 18 months (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory). That is small for a memory trial. The authors called it a pilot, and some side effects were stomach-related, reported in 4 people on curcumin and 2 on placebo.

What are the first signs of turmeric liver damage?

Tiredness, nausea, poor appetite, dark urine and yellow skin or eyes are the signs NCCIH lists (NCCIH, Turmeric). In LiverTox cases they usually began 1 to 4 months after starting (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric). Stop the capsules and call a doctor if any appear.

Does stopping turmeric reverse the liver injury?

In most cases, yes. LiverTox reports that most cases resolve 1 to 3 months after stopping (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric). A few severe cases led to liver failure, transplant or death, which is why early symptoms deserve a prompt doctor's visit rather than waiting.

Can I take turmeric with aspirin or clopidogrel?

Ask your doctor first. MSKCC says turmeric may raise bleeding risk with antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants such as warfarin (MSKCC, Turmeric). The data are limited, but combining anything that affects bleeding needs a prescriber's review, especially before surgery (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).

Does Synaptril contain piperine or black pepper?

No. The Supplement Facts panel and the other-ingredients line list no piperine and no black pepper extract. The turmeric is a plain 95% curcuminoid extract, so its absorption is likely low, as with most standard curcumin (NCCIH, Turmeric).

Should I take Synaptril with black pepper to absorb more curcumin?

Talk to your doctor before trying it. Piperine raises curcumin absorption, and NCCIH warns that highly bioavailable forms may harm the liver (NCCIH, Turmeric). LiverTox has not shown piperine itself causes injury, but more absorbed curcumin is the pattern in the reported cases (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric).
