Ubiquinone vs Ubiquinol: What the Difference Means for a Capsule

Quick answer

Ubiquinone vs ubiquinol is a question about two forms of the same compound, CoQ10. In chemical terms, ubiquinone is oxidized and ubiquinol is reduced. The Synaptril label says "coenzyme Q10 (as ubiquinone)" and prints no amount. Our sources do not show that either form works better for memory.

The two forms01

What is the difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol?

Ubiquinone and ubiquinol are two chemical states of coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinone is the oxidized form. Ubiquinol is the reduced form, which means it carries two extra hydrogen atoms.

The body converts one into the other all the time, so they are not two different nutrients. They are two settings of the same switch.

Inside cells, CoQ10 shuttles between the two states while it helps release energy. A supplement just supplies the raw material, and the cell decides which state it needs.

Supplement makers like to sell ubiquinol as a premium form. The Linus Pauling Institute, in its CoQ10 review, gives typical supplement doses of 30 to 100 mg a day and says absorption is low, under 5% (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).

On the bottle02

Which form does Synaptril use?

Synaptril uses ubiquinone. The label names the last line of the blend as "coenzyme Q10 (as ubiquinone)".

Ubiquinone is the more common form in supplements and is the one most research has used. That matters because trial results for ubiquinone cannot be assumed to carry over to a different form. The label does not say whether the maker chose it for cost, shelf life or any other reason.

Uptake03

Does ubiquinol absorb better than ubiquinone?

Some makers say so, but the sources we use do not settle it. The Linus Pauling Institute stresses that absorption of any CoQ10 is low and that taking it with fat helps (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).

Even if ubiquinol did absorb better, that would only mean more reaches the blood. It would not show that a person gains anything you could notice. A bigger share absorbed from a tiny dose is still a tiny dose. More uptake is not the same as a better result.

For a person on warfarin, a better-absorbed form is not a reassurance. NCCIH and Memorial Sloan Kettering both flag CoQ10 in general for blood thinner users (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10).

Fat helps with either form. Because the Synaptril label gives no food rule, a person who wants to follow the fat advice could simply take the capsule with a meal that includes some fat, such as eggs or yogurt.

The bigger issue04

Why does the CoQ10 amount matter more than the form?

The amount matters more because a form cannot make up for a missing dose. The label does not print how much CoQ10 a capsule holds.

Our estimate is under about 35 mg, with a label-order ceiling of 96 mg (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling). The usual supplement range is 30 to 100 mg. The bars below put the blend lines next to doses seen in studies.

Blue bars: what one capsule can hold. The label prints only the magnesium amount. For the other lines we show two ceilings: the most the label order allows (575 mg divided by the line number) and our tighter estimate once the magnesium glycinate takes its share (about 175 mg left for five lines). Gold bars: daily amounts used in studies or typical products. Real amounts may be far lower than either ceiling.

Estimates from the label order, not lab results. See the full list on the Synaptril supplement facts page.

Choosing05

Should the form decide your choice?

It can be a tie-breaker, not a reason. Ask for the amount, the maker and a lab report before you worry about which form sits in the capsule.

A seller who names the form but not the dose has given you a detail and kept back the number that counts. Weigh that against the product's strengths, which are a full ingredient list, a simple one-a-day routine and a 60-day return window.

If you try Synaptril, the 60-day guarantee gives you a review point. Keep taking any prescribed medicine, and ask a doctor first if you use a blood thinner.

FAQ06

CoQ10 form questions

Can the body convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol?

Yes. The body switches between the two forms as part of normal cell chemistry, so taking one form does not stop the other from forming. That is why the label wording matters less than the dose.

Is ubiquinol safer than ubiquinone?

Our sources do not show that. Both forms are treated alike for safety, including the warfarin caution. Ask your pharmacist if you take other medicines.

Does the label say how much ubiquinone is in a capsule?

No. The label prints only the 575 mg blend total, so the CoQ10 amount is unknown. Our estimate is under about 35 mg, and it is an estimate, not a lab result.

Why do some CoQ10 products cost more?

A premium form, a branded softgel or an oil base can add cost. Price alone does not prove a better result, so compare the amount per capsule and the proof behind the product.
