Turmeric Liver Damage: How Rare, How Serious

Quick answer

Turmeric liver damage is uncommon but real. The federal LiverTox database gives turmeric its top likelihood score, A, meaning cases are well documented. Injury usually shows up 1 to 4 months after starting and mostly clears after stopping. Synaptril contains a turmeric extract, so the signs are worth knowing.

The facts01

Can turmeric cause liver damage?

Yes, turmeric can cause liver damage in rare cases. It is not common, but it is documented well enough that regulators and reference databases mention it.

NCCIH reports liver injury linked to turmeric products and says high-absorption forms may be a concern (NCCIH, Turmeric). LiverTox rates the likelihood of turmeric causing injury as category A, its highest (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric).

Most people who take turmeric have no trouble. The point is that "natural" does not mean "harmless to the liver".

The liver processes almost everything you swallow, including herbal extracts. When a concentrated extract overloads or irritates it, the damage is called drug-induced or herb-induced liver injury, and it can look like many other liver problems.

The timeline02

How soon does turmeric liver injury appear?

Turmeric liver injury usually appears 1 to 4 months after a person starts taking it. It rarely shows up in the first few days.

LiverTox reports that most cases improve after the product is stopped, though a few have been severe (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric). That pattern is why the stopping step matters so much.

What to watch03

What are the warning signs of liver trouble?

The warning signs are dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, deep tiredness, nausea and pain in the upper right belly. Any of them is a reason to call a doctor.

Stop the supplement while you wait for advice, and bring the bottle. Keep taking any prescribed medicine unless the doctor says otherwise.

Get urgent care for severe symptoms

Yellow skin with confusion, vomiting or severe belly pain needs same-day medical help.

You can also report a bad reaction to the FDA through its reporting portal (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem). Our Synaptril side effects page lists the other cautions.

Do not wait for all the signs to appear together. One clear sign, such as dark urine, is enough to stop and call. Doctors can check liver blood tests quickly, and an early answer is far better than a late one.

On the bottle04

How much turmeric is in Synaptril?

A Synaptril capsule likely holds under about 44 mg of turmeric extract. That is our estimate, because the label prints only the 575 mg blend total.

The label lists turmeric fifth by weight, and the magnesium glycinate in front of it needs most of the blend. The label-order ceiling is 115 mg (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling). Doses in the liver reports were generally higher, but the label cannot confirm what is inside.

  3. 3Butcher's broomnot printed
  4. 4L-carnitinenot printed
  5. 5Turmeric (95% curcuminoids)not printed
  6. 6Coenzyme Q10not printed

Step 1. The label prints 80 mg of magnesium "as magnesium glycinate from proprietary blend".

Step 2. By formula weight, magnesium glycinate is about 14% magnesium; buffered grades run up to about 20%. So 80 mg of magnesium needs about 400-570 mg of the compound.

Step 3. 575 mg minus that leaves about 5-175 mg for alpha-lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric and CoQ10 together.

Our estimate from the label, not a lab test. A blend has to list its total and its order, not single amounts (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling). Magnesium figures from NIH (NIH ODS, Magnesium).

Estimate only. No lab report is published for the capsules.

Before you start05

Who should check with a doctor first?

Anyone with liver disease, anyone who drinks heavily and anyone taking several medicines should ask first. The Synaptril label itself asks you to consult a physician if you use a medication or have a condition.

Pregnant or nursing mothers and people under 18 should not use it, per the label. If you do try it, tell your doctor and note the date you started.

The start date matters because of the 1 to 4 month window. If you ever need to explain a strange blood test, a dated note makes the link much easier to see.

Alcohol, other herbal products and some prescription drugs also load the liver. Listing everything you take, in one place, helps your doctor spot a pattern.

FAQ06

Turmeric and liver questions

Do I need to avoid alcohol with a turmeric capsule?

The label does not say. Alcohol also loads the liver, so heavy drinking plus a concentrated extract is a poor mix. Ask your doctor what is sensible for you.

Is a little turmeric in food a liver risk?

Turmeric used as a kitchen spice is not linked to these reports. The cases involve concentrated supplements. A pinch in curry is a very different dose from a capsule of extract.

Can liver damage from turmeric be reversed?

In most reported cases the liver recovered after the product was stopped. A few were severe, so seek care early rather than waiting to see whether the signs fade.

Should I get a liver blood test on Synaptril?

The label does not require one. If you have liver disease or take drugs that stress the liver, ask your doctor whether a baseline test makes sense before you start.
