Synaptril Capsules Explained: What One Capsule Holds and What It Does Not Say

Quick answer

Synaptril capsules are vegetable capsules, 30 to a bottle, taken one a day. Each holds 80 mg of magnesium inside a 575 mg proprietary blend of six ingredients. Only the magnesium amount is printed. No trial of the capsules exists, so the claims on the front are unproven.

The basics01

What are Synaptril capsules?

Synaptril capsules are a dietary supplement sold as 30 vegetable capsules in a white bottle. The label says to take one capsule daily, so a bottle lasts 30 days.

The shell is hypromellose, a plant-based material, so the capsule contains no gelatin. The label also lists microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid and silicon dioxide as other ingredients.

The front panel reads "Advanced Brain Support*", "Enhances Memory & Focus*" and "Boosts Mental Energy*". The asterisk points to the FDA statement: those lines have not been evaluated by the FDA, and the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease (21 CFR 101.93, structure/function claims).

Inside one capsule02

What is inside one Synaptril capsule?

One Synaptril capsule holds 80 mg of magnesium and a 575 mg proprietary blend of six ingredients. Magnesium glycinate is the first ingredient and the source of the magnesium.

The six blend lines come in order by weight, heaviest first: magnesium glycinate, alpha-lipoic acid, butcher's broom root extract, L-carnitine, turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids) and coenzyme Q10. The label prints the total, 575 mg, but not the share of each line (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling).

  3. 3Butcher's broomnot printed
  4. 4L-carnitinenot printed
  5. 5Turmeric (95% curcuminoids)not printed
  6. 6Coenzyme Q10not printed

Step 1. The label prints 80 mg of magnesium "as magnesium glycinate from proprietary blend".

Step 2. By formula weight, magnesium glycinate is about 14% magnesium; buffered grades run up to about 20%. So 80 mg of magnesium needs about 400-570 mg of the compound.

Step 3. 575 mg minus that leaves about 5-175 mg for alpha-lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric and CoQ10 together.

Our estimate from the label, not a lab test. A blend has to list its total and its order, not single amounts (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling). Magnesium figures from NIH (NIH ODS, Magnesium).

The glycinate share is our estimate from the label, not a number the maker printed. The full breakdown is on the Synaptril supplement facts page.

What is missing03

What does the Synaptril label leave out?

The label leaves out the amounts of five of the six ingredients, the maker, the country of manufacture and any lab report. It does name a distributor, Gluco Elixir of Aurora, Colorado.

A blend is not illegal or unusual. It is simply less open than a label that lists every amount, and it asks you to trust the seller instead of checking the numbers yourself.

That matters because a proprietary blend lets a company list a total weight without splitting it up. You can see that alpha-lipoic acid is present, but not whether a capsule holds 5 mg or 100 mg of it.

Daily use04

How do you take Synaptril capsules?

Take one Synaptril capsule a day with water, as the label directs. Do not take more than that. Pick a time you can repeat, such as breakfast.

The label says not to use it under age 18, or if pregnant or nursing, and to ask a physician first if you take any medication. Magnesium can interfere with some antibiotics, and turmeric and CoQ10 can matter for people on blood thinners (MSKCC, Turmeric).

If you miss a day, skip it and carry on the next morning. Never take two capsules to catch up, because that doubles the magnesium and every blend line at once.

Keep the bottle closed, in a cool dry place, and out of reach of children. Our Synaptril dosage page covers missed doses, food and timing in more detail.

Evidence05

Do Synaptril capsules work?

Nobody knows, because no trial of Synaptril itself has been published. The ingredients have been studied one at a time, often at doses and in forms the label does not confirm.

The Global Council on Brain Health reviewed brain supplements and could not endorse any ingredient or product for brain health (GCBH/AARP 2019, brain supplements). That is a reason to treat the front-of-bottle claims as marketing wording, not results.

If you try the capsules, use the 60-day money-back guarantee as your checking window and note your own memory and focus before you start. See does Synaptril work for the claim-by-claim view.

FAQ06

Synaptril capsule questions, answered

How many capsules are in a bottle of Synaptril?

A bottle holds 30 vegetable capsules. At the label dose of one capsule a day, that is a 30-day supply. Three- and six-bottle packs stretch that to 90 or 180 days.

Are Synaptril capsules vegan?

The shell is hypromellose, a plant-based material, and the label lists no gelatin. The label does not state a vegan certification, and the sources of the other ingredients are not printed.

What size is a Synaptril capsule?

The label does not print a capsule size. It gives only the contents: 80 mg of magnesium inside a 575 mg blend per capsule. Ask the order desk if capsule size matters to you.

Can I open a Synaptril capsule and mix it with food?

The label gives no such direction, so the safe answer is to swallow the capsule whole. Opening it is not covered by the label, and the powder may taste bitter.
