Memory Supplement Ingredients: What Each One Is Really For
Memory supplement ingredients usually include a mineral, an antioxidant, a plant extract and an energy compound. Synaptril lists magnesium glycinate, alpha-lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric extract and CoQ10. Each has a known use, and none has a proven memory benefit.

The usual suspects01
What are the usual memory supplement ingredients?
Memory supplement ingredients fall into a few families. There are minerals, antioxidants, plant extracts, amino acid derivatives and vitamins.
Brands pick from these families and describe them with brain words. The words come from their general roles in the body, not from memory trials. The NCCIH advises that memory loss can come from treatable problems, so ingredient lists are the wrong place to start (NCCIH, supplements for cognitive function).
Reading the list well means asking what each item is known for, at what dose, and in which form.
It also means watching for the word blend. A proprietary blend gives one total weight and hides the split, which is the case on the Synaptril label (575 mg, with magnesium printed apart).
Inside Synaptril02
What does each Synaptril ingredient do?
Each of the six lines has an ordinary, documented role. None of those roles is memory.
Magnesium glycinate
A mineral in a gentle, bound form. Adults need 310 to 420 mg a day from all sources (NIH ODS, Magnesium).
Alpha-lipoic acid
An antioxidant the body makes. Used in diabetes nerve research; may lower blood sugar (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).
Butcher's broom
A shrub root used traditionally for leg circulation (EMA, Rusci rhizoma (butcher's broom)).
L-carnitine
An amino acid derivative that helps cells use fat for energy. The body makes enough (NIH ODS, Carnitine).
Turmeric extract
A spice extract with 95% curcuminoids. Poorly absorbed (NCCIH, Turmeric).
Coenzyme Q10
A compound in cell energy. Typical intake 30 to 100 mg a day (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).
Notice that the magnesium line is the only one with a printed weight, 80 mg, or 19% of the daily value. That is about a fifth of a 420 mg RDA. The role descriptions above are general, not claims about Synaptril's effect.
Reading the order03
What does the ingredient order on a label tell you?
On a proprietary blend, the order tells you the weight rank. The heaviest ingredient comes first, and each next line weighs no more than the one before (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling).
That gives a ceiling. The second line weighs at most 288 mg, and the sixth at most 96 mg. Because the first line, magnesium glycinate, likely takes 400 to 570 mg, the real amounts of the rest are probably far lower. These are estimates from the label.
The tighter reading, after the glycinate, puts the alpha-lipoic acid under about 175 mg, butcher's broom near 88 mg, L-carnitine near 58 mg, turmeric near 44 mg and CoQ10 near 35 mg at most.
| Label line | Place | Per capsule | Amount used in research | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Magnesium Glycinate (magnesium 80 mg, 19% DV) | 1 of 6 | 80 mg magnesium (printed) | RDA 310-420 mg a day from all sources; supplement limit 350 mg (NIH ODS, Magnesium) (Mah & Pitre 2021, magnesium and sleep) | No memory trials found; a small sleep-onset effect in older adults |
| Alpha Lipoic Acid | 2 of 6 | at most 288 mg by label order; likely under 175 mg | 600 mg a day in small Alzheimer's studies (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid) (MSKCC, Alpha-Lipoic Acid) | Too limited to judge for memory |
| Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) Root Extract | 3 of 6 | at most 192 mg by label order; likely under 88 mg | Traditional use for heavy legs; no brain dose exists (EMA, Rusci rhizoma (butcher's broom)) | No brain or memory evidence found |
| L-Carnitine | 4 of 6 | at most 144 mg by label order; likely under 58 mg | Memory studies used acetyl-L-carnitine, 1.5-3 g a day (a different form) (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Cochrane, acetyl-L-carnitine for dementia) | Unclear; a Cochrane review found no routine benefit |
| Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Rhizome Extract 95% Curcuminoids | 5 of 6 | at most 115 mg by label order; likely under 44 mg | 180 mg curcumin a day as Theracurmin in one 18-month pilot (NCCIH, Turmeric) (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric) (MSKCC, Turmeric) (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory) | Small, mixed pilot trials |
| Coenzyme Q 10 (as Ubiquinone) | 6 of 6 | at most 96 mg by label order; likely under 35 mg | Typical supplements 30-100 mg a day (NCCIH, Coenzyme Q10) (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10) (MSKCC, Coenzyme Q10) | No cognitive benefit in brain-disease trials |

Which ingredients do memory supplements often leave out?
Many memory supplements leave out the proven basics: sleep, movement and checks for causes such as low B12 or thyroid trouble (MedlinePlus, Memory loss). A capsule cannot replace them.
Synaptril also leaves out stimulants, and the label lists no caffeine. Its other ingredients are listed as hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid and silicon dioxide.
Our ingredients page goes line by line. One note on form: ubiquinone, the form of CoQ10 on this label, is the standard oxidized form, and the Linus Pauling Institute notes that under 5% is absorbed, better with a fatty meal (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10).
Choosing05
How can you use an ingredient list to decide?
Use the list to ask better questions, not to find a hero ingredient. Ask for the amounts, the form and the study.
If a seller cannot answer, weigh that. For Synaptril, the order desk can tell you what it knows. Write the questions down before you call, and note the answers with the date.
You might also check how the ingredients fit your medicines. Magnesium needs spacing from some antibiotics and bone drugs, alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood sugar, and CoQ10 and turmeric matter for warfarin. A doctor or pharmacist can sort these out in minutes.

FAQ06
Ingredient questions
What is the safest memory supplement ingredient?
No ingredient is safe for everyone. Safety depends on dose, form and your medicines. Even common minerals have limits, such as 350 mg a day of supplemental magnesium (NIH ODS, Magnesium).
Do vitamins belong in a memory supplement?
A vitamin can matter if you are low in it, such as B12. For people who are not low, evidence is weak. Synaptril contains no vitamins in its blend.
Why is butcher's broom in a memory capsule?
Its traditional use is for leg circulation, and no brain use is documented. The label does not explain why it is there, and we have not found a published reason.
Are plant extracts stronger than powders?
An extract is concentrated to a set marker, such as 95% curcuminoids for turmeric. Stronger does not mean better absorbed or safer, and liver reports exist for high-dose forms (NIH LiverTox, Turmeric).
