Magnesium Glycinate vs Magnesium Oxide: Same Mineral, Two Very Different Labels

Quick answer

Magnesium glycinate vs magnesium oxide is a choice between two carriers for one mineral. Oxide packs more magnesium per milligram of powder but dissolves poorly. Glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine and is about 14% magnesium by weight. Synaptril uses glycinate: 80 mg of magnesium, which takes roughly 400 to 570 mg of the compound.

The short answer01

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide?

The difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide is the partner the magnesium is bound to. Oxide pairs it with oxygen. Glycinate pairs it with glycine, a small amino acid.

That partner changes three things: how much magnesium sits in each milligram of powder, how well the gut takes it up, and how likely it is to loosen the stool. The mineral itself is identical once it is absorbed.

Think of it as the box around the gift. A heavy box holds the same gift, but the box changes how easily it reaches you, and how much room it takes in a capsule.

The Office of Dietary Supplements notes that forms which dissolve well in liquid are absorbed more completely than poorly soluble forms such as oxide (NIH ODS, Magnesium). Studies on the exact gap vary, so treat any big percentage you see online with care.

Comparison02

How do the two forms compare?

Magnesium oxide wins on magnesium content, and glycinate wins on gentleness. Neither wins on proof for memory or focus, because no form has that proof.

On the label03

Which form does Synaptril use?

Synaptril uses magnesium glycinate. The label reads "Magnesium (as Magnesium Glycinate from proprietary blend) 80 mg, 19% DV," and glycinate is the first line in the 575 mg blend.

Because glycinate is only about 14% magnesium, 80 mg of the mineral needs a lot of compound. That leaves little room for the other five lines.

  2. 2Alpha-lipoic acidnot printed
  3. 3Butcher's broomnot printed
  4. 4L-carnitinenot printed
  5. 5Turmeric (95% curcuminoids)not printed
  6. 6Coenzyme Q10not printed

Step 1. The label prints 80 mg of magnesium "as magnesium glycinate from proprietary blend".

Step 2. By formula weight, magnesium glycinate is about 14% magnesium; buffered grades run up to about 20%. So 80 mg of magnesium needs about 400-570 mg of the compound.

Step 3. 575 mg minus that leaves about 5-175 mg for alpha-lipoic acid, butcher's broom, L-carnitine, turmeric and CoQ10 together.

Our estimate from the label, not a lab test. A blend has to list its total and its order, not single amounts (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling). Magnesium figures from NIH (NIH ODS, Magnesium).

The label does not say whether it is a plain or buffered grade, so the share is an estimate. The magnesium glycinate page shows the full working.

Choosing04

Which magnesium form should you choose?

Choose the form your doctor suggests for your goal, then check the elemental magnesium on the label. The elemental amount is the number that counts against the limit.

For the daily upper limit of 350 mg from supplements, the form does not matter. Adults need 310 to 420 mg a day from all sources, and food covers most of it (NIH ODS, Magnesium). At 80 mg, Synaptril adds about a fifth of a 420 mg need.

People with kidney disease, and people who take certain antibiotics or bone drugs, should ask a physician before any magnesium product. Keep taking prescribed medicine either way.

If you buy a supplement that lists only "magnesium" with no form, ask the seller which one it is. A clear form name is a small sign of an open label, and Synaptril does name it.

FAQ05

Glycinate and oxide questions

Is magnesium glycinate better absorbed than magnesium oxide?

Generally yes. Forms that dissolve well in water are taken up more fully than oxide, which dissolves poorly (NIH ODS, Magnesium). How much better is debated, and the studies are small, so no exact figure is safe to quote.

Does magnesium oxide cause diarrhea more often than glycinate?

It is more likely to, because unabsorbed magnesium draws water into the gut. Any magnesium supplement can do this above 350 mg a day (NIH ODS, Magnesium). Glycinate is usually gentler at the same elemental dose, but not free of the effect.

What does elemental magnesium mean on a label?

Elemental magnesium is the weight of the mineral alone, without the compound it is bound to. Synaptril prints 80 mg of elemental magnesium. The compound that carries it weighs several times more, which is why the blend math matters.

Can you tell which magnesium form is in a pill without a label?

No. Powders of different magnesium forms look alike, and only a lab test can tell them apart. Read the ingredient line, and treat a missing form name as a reason to ask the seller before buying.

Why is magnesium oxide so common in cheap supplements?

Oxide is cheap to make and carries about 60% magnesium, so a small tablet reaches a big number on the label. That helps the price and the pill size. It does not help absorption, which is why many brands choose other forms.
