BDNF Supplements: What BDNF Is and What Supplements Can Claim

Quick answer

BDNF supplements are products marketed around brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein involved in how nerve cells grow and connect. Marketing often implies a supplement can raise it. No such proof is cited here, and Synaptril's label makes no BDNF claim at all. Habits such as activity and sleep have better support.

The basics01

What is BDNF and why do supplements mention it?

BDNF stands for brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein found in the brain that takes part in how nerve cells survive, grow and connect. Researchers study it, which is why marketers like to mention it.

The step from "studied in a lab" to "raised by a capsule" is large. Having a role in the brain does not show that a pill can change the level, or that a higher level means better memory or focus in a healthy person.

Be careful with phrases such as "boosts brain growth factor" or "nerve repair." Neither is a claim a supplement may make as fact, and a seller who uses them is stretching what the science allows. The FTC also expects health claims to rest on solid evidence (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

A supplement may say it "supports" a body structure under federal rules. It may not say it treats or prevents disease (21 CFR 101.93, structure/function claims). A claim about BDNF that hints at either deserves a hard look.

The evidence02

Do BDNF supplements work?

There is no proof in the sources we reviewed that a BDNF supplement helps memory or focus. Single ingredients get named in online talk, but the cited studies measure thinking tests, not BDNF in daily life.

Online posts often cite lab and animal work. Those findings are early. A result in a dish or a mouse does not tell you what a capsule does in a person, and it is the human trials that matter for a buyer.

Take turmeric. A small 2018 trial of 40 adults used a high-absorption curcumin product at 90 mg twice a day for 18 months and found better verbal memory and attention. It was a pilot, with a different product from Synaptril's (Small et al. 2018, curcumin and memory). The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says no proven benefit exists for any use of turmeric (NCCIH, Turmeric).

Curcumin helps memoryOne small pilot; other reviews call it weak (MSKCC, Turmeric)

This product03

Is Synaptril a BDNF supplement?

No. Synaptril does not describe itself as a BDNF supplement, and its label never uses the term. The front says "Advanced Brain Support*", "Enhances Memory & Focus*" and "Boosts Mental Energy*", each with the FDA asterisk.

Its turmeric line is the one most often tied to BDNF talk, but it is the fifth of six lines by weight, with a label-order ceiling of about 115 mg per capsule and likely far less. The pilot above used a higher dose in a different product.

  • Magnesium

  • Coenzyme Q10

117% of the low end at most
    1 capsule, label-order ceiling (line 6)96 mg
1 capsule, likely most after the magnesium35 mg
30-100 mg a day in typical supplements30-100 mg

Not printed: line 6 of 6 in a 575 mg blend. (Linus Pauling Institute, Coenzyme Q10)

Blue bars: what one capsule can hold. The label prints only the magnesium amount. For the other lines we show two ceilings: the most the label order allows (575 mg divided by the line number) and our tighter estimate once the magnesium glycinate takes its share (about 175 mg left for five lines). Gold bars: daily amounts used in studies or typical products. Real amounts may be far lower than either ceiling.

Our estimate is that the five lines after magnesium glycinate share only about 5 to 175 mg in total. That is an estimate from the label, not a lab result, but it shows why a headline dose cannot be assumed.

If a page says Synaptril raises BDNF, it is going beyond the label. That includes paid press releases and "review" posts, which are advertising and not evidence.

What is supported04

What habits have better support than BDNF supplements?

Physical activity, blood pressure control and cognitive training are the habits a 2017 national review called encouraging for brain health (NIH on NASEM 2017 dementia prevention). The CDC suggests 150 minutes of moderate activity a week and strength work on two days (CDC, Adult physical activity).

Habits are also easier to test. You can count steps, log hours of sleep and check your blood pressure, and each number tells you something. A BDNF level cannot be measured at home.

Sleep belongs on the list, with seven or more hours a night (CDC, About Sleep). None of this needs a capsule.

FAQ05

BDNF supplement questions, answered

Can food raise BDNF?

Claims about food and BDNF circulate widely, but none is cited here. The better-supported advice is plain: stay active, sleep well and eat a balanced diet. Ask a dietitian for personal plans.

Is turmeric safe if I want to try it for BDNF?

Turmeric is generally eaten in food without trouble, but extracts have liver injury reports and may add to bleeding with warfarin (NCCIH, Turmeric) (MSKCC, Turmeric). Ask a doctor before taking an extract.

Does exercise matter more than a supplement?

For overall brain health, activity has better support than any capsule, according to national reviews (NIH on NASEM 2017 dementia prevention). It is also free and carries few risks.
